1993 SkyBox Return of Superman trading cards chart the inevitable. Yes, it was a big deal when Doomsday beat Superman to a pulp and the Man of Steel breathed his first last breath. But Superman is on the Mt. Rushmore of iconic comic characters. You don’t just kill him and keep him killed. It’s that simple.
And so is this set.
1993 SkyBox Return of Superman Checklist Details
This is a product aimed at people who prefer trading cards to comic books. Or collect trading cards and comic books. The 100-card base set works to retell the story of how a handful of Supermen stepped in to fill the void of the real deal’s demise. This route is a lot faster to work through than over 20 full comic books worth of content that the cards draw from. Think big moments, headline captions and flashier art over nuance and dialogue.
Fronts start with a silver border tiled with the various Superman logos from the time, something that would look a lot flashier had this set come out even a couple of years later once foil or even chrome became commonplace in the hobby. Colorful comic images take the center with another S icon at the bottom next to the caption.
Backs have more logos, this time in color, taking up the background. The caption repeats itself with a brief description that helps push the overall story along.
The base set is busy and action-driven, an encapsulation of mainstream superhero comics at the time.
Inserts
What’s missing are the gimmicks. 1993 SkyBox Return of Superman has just one insert set. Four Foil cards combine to land one per box. That sounds tough, but with a massive production run, they’re not hard to find.
Factory sets came with a couple of exclusives. First is a header. There’s also an SP1, although it has two versions. The Silver one has a whopping 35,000 copies. There’s also a scarce Gold version that has just 300 copies. These shouldn’t be confused by the foil insert with the same number. Factory set cards carry the caption “Earth’s Greatest Hero” while the foil card says “Superman – The Man of Steel!.”
1993 SkyBox Return of Superman has a production run of 10,000 numbered cases, each with 12 boxes.
