The third time is still a charm with 1992 Impel Marvel Universe Series 3. While it has some differences from the previous sets, it sticks with what the line does best — acting as a one-stop deep dive into the characters from the period.
1992 Impel Marvel Universe Series 3 Checklist Details
With 200 cards, the base set is the biggest yet for Impel’s Marvel Universe sets. It’s an increase from 162 found in both the inaugural 1990 release and 1991’s follow-up.
Like before, the checklist is broken down into several sections, each looking at a slightly different Marvel theme. Super Heroes kicks things off, focusing on the good guys and gals. With 70 cards, this is also the biggest section of the set.
Thirty partnerships, some solid and others on the awkward side, are next in Team-Ups.
It also puts some distance between the heroes and the next subset, Super-Villains.
Rounding out the set is a mix of new and returning themes that give more Marvel highlights: Rookies, Cosmic Beginnings, Team, Wars and Milestones.
The design is a departure from the previous two years. This time, characters are cast against a cosmic outer background looking like they’re busting through a portal from their own world.
Card backs remain extremely informative with a detailed bio, team affiliations, first appearances and more. Power Ratings return, showing how characters stack up in the areas of Strength, Intelligence, Energy Projection, Mental Powers, Fighting Ability and Speed.
Checklist Variation
A checklist is the final card in the set. It actually has two slightly different versions. On the back, you can find it with or with a white box on the top and bottom of the back. This is the tougher version to find and carries a higher value.
Holograms and Other Items
Holograms are synonymous with the Marvel Universe line. They’re back again as the lone insert. Landing 1:12 packs, there are five cards in the set.
1992 Impel Marvel Universe Series 3 packs included a trio of special offers. A tin factory set has a production run of 10,000. In addition to the set, there’s an exclusive Power Ratings card explaining criteria. It might not have any characters, but it is something master set builders might be hunting for. There’s also a custom binder and a four-card sheet that measures the 8.5″ by 11″ and had a print run of 30,000.
1992 Impel Marvel Universe Series 3 is still a popular set. That said, it’s not as famous as its predecessors. Think of it as diminishing returns. Although different in its look, the overall approach isn’t new anymore. This set breaks no new ground. That doesn’t make it bad. It simply means that it has a more difficult time standing out.
Like virtually all 1990s Marvel trading cards, prices have been creeping up. Unopened boxes have seen some of the biggest gains. You can expect to pay around $125-$150 for one today.
