1992 Impel Amazing Spider-Man 30th Anniversary isn’t your typical set of Marvel trading cards. One could argue that Spider-Man isn’t your typical superhero.
When it comes to Marvel trading cards, the Impel name is best known for its run of Marvel Universe sets. However, they did do a standalone release dedicated the most famous arachnid-themed character as well before changing their name to SkyBox. It’s not particularly big or even a widespread release. But it is Spider-Man and it does honor a significant milestone in the character’s career.
With just five cards, size isn’t a factor with this set. It’s not meant to be. Rather, it was created as a promo set. All came packaged together in a cello pack, so there weren’t any surprises, either.
The checklist is mostly character-based with cards for Spider-Man, Mary Jane and an overview of some of his main enemies. There’s also cards dedicated to Spider-Man’s often-told origins and the black costume that was introduced in the 1980s.
The cards themselves are actually quite nice and pack in a lot of information. Fronts are blue with a webbing motif and a large image in the middle. Backs are broken down into four main blocks. A quote and basic info like their first appearance is at the top. These give way to a solidly sized bio and then a “Web-Zinger” at the bottom with a trivia tidbit.
These cards are too hard to find today. That said, as a promo set, it can be somewhat overlooked compared to full mainstream releases. This includes another 30th Anniversary set from 1992, this one released by Comic Images.
