What if Disneyland attractions were sports cards? 1991 Upper Deck Disneyland Preview Series aims to answer that.
The mini set has just five cards (it is a Preview set, after all). At its most basic, each highlights one of the premier destinations at the theme park. However, they also toss in a key character shown playing a sport. What does Mickey Mouse playing baseball and Splash Mountain have to do with each other? How about hoops legend Goofy and Big Thunder Mountain? At least hockey-playing Donald Duck and the Matterhorn share ice and cold.
Backs have key vitals along with some trivia. The featured sport is once again noted with a large icon but there’s no other through line to connect them. It was 1991 and sports cards were all the rage. At this point, Upper Deck was making sets for all four sports or they were in the pipeline with deals in place. The pairing is odd and doesn’t make much sense now. Perhaps back then the Upper Deck thread was enough.
Or maybe it wasn’t. Typically, a “preview” leads to something. This one ultimately didn’t. Although Upper Deck would eventually make a full set of trading cards dedicated to Disneyland, it didn’t come out until 2005 as a spinoff of their Disney Treasures line.
This set is readily available still today for very reasonable prices. It has never held much in the way of value.
