The Little Mermaid paved the way for a new era of animated Disney classics. And even though they came out more than a year after the film was first released, 1991 Pro Set Little Mermaid trading cards helped open up the market for more Disney releases.
It’s not a complex release with a simple base set and a few inserts that encouraged young collectors to use, play and, ultimately, destroy, their original states. But we’re talking about a set from the early 1990s, printed by Pro Set no less. As a result, there’s no shortage of supply out there still today.
The 1991 Pro Set Little Mermaid base set has 90 cards. Fronts are simply stills from the film. Captions and other design elements don’t exist. Backs have a short write-up that summarizes the plot.
Every pack includes at least two inserts. The first is a Color-In card that has a character on both sides. With only line art, collectors are intended to use them like they might a coloring book. Packs also have a Stand-Up card that could be used as a display or even simple toy.
Every fifth hobby pack has a Stick ‘Ems sticker. These fall one per jumbo pack as well.
Pro Set also produced a factory set for the product. These came with all the basic cards and inserts. It also has six exclusive Sponge cards.
