R-rated movies were typical trading card subjects in the early 1990s. But some exceptions do exist — like 1991 Impel Terminator 2: Judgement Day. In fact, it’s one of two mainstream sets that greeted the blockbuster as it hit the big screen. Although simple in its delivery, it’s a fun and affordable set to look back on today.
1991 Impel Terminator 2: Judgement Day Checklist Details
The base set has 140 cards, which is on the large side for a single movie-based release. This provides room for not just a detailed breakdown and recap but some slots for the movie’s stars and background.
The design leans into the mechanical theme of cyborgs and robot machinery. A grey outer border gives way to an inner frame filled with mechanical workings. Layered over top is the photo with a lot coming from the movie’s many action scenes.
Backs offer up write-ups to help flesh out the film and its background.
Packs don’t have any traditional inserts. However, there are ten different offer cards that come one per pack. These gave collectors an opportunity to buy Terminator 2 themed merchandise including a poster featuring the entire set, stationary and clothing. In retrospect, these items are a sign of the era and are a lot of fun to look back on now.
In addition to the usual packs and boxes, 1991 Impel Terminator 2: Judgement Day trading cards also have a factory set. Included in these are two exclusive cards not available elsewhere. The first puts the spotlight on specially effects legend, Stan Winston. There’s also a hologram featuring the film’s star, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Like virtually every set from 1991, there’s a lot of this set out there. This has helped keep prices relatively in check over the decades.
