Without a full release for the classic first film, 1989 Topps Ghostbusters II trading cards marked the first chance collectors got to build a mainstream set dedicated to the franchise. It’s not a revolutionary release or one that’s particularly valuable, but it is Ghostbusters.
1989 Topps Ghostbusters II Checklist: What’s On It?
The base set totals 88 cards. Much of it focuses on retelling the story. But before it gets into that, there are six character cards that introduce the characters and the actors who play them.
Design-wise, this isn’t one of the more memorable looks from Topps during the ’80s. For starters, there’s a bright blue outer border. It works with the original Star Wars set, but that’s in part because of the additional starfield. Here, it’s just plain blue. Images have an electricity-inspired inner frame. The revamped Ghostbusters II logo and a caption round things out.
If you’re a fan of the new ghostly logo, they’re the dominant part of the card back. Write-ups are kept short.
In the middle of the 1989 Topps Ghostbusters II checklist, there are five cards that recreate the Ghostbusters commercial seen in the film. These design takes a bit of a deviation here as speech bubbles replace the usual captions. The frame is also adjusted slightly to resemble a television.
There are also “Wide Screen SFX Shot” cards that showcase some of the movie’s special effects in their original aspect ration like you’d see on the big screen. Some design artwork is also in the base set.
Every pack comes with one of 11 different stickers. Images are a mix of the Ghostbusters and some of the poltergeists they encounter. They’re plain black with a bit of white around the image.
Although this is the first set of Ghostbusters trading cards, you can find Slimer and Stay Puft in 1988 Topps Fright Flicks, a set that delves into ’80s horror with a sense of humor. In 2016, Cryptozoic released a comprehensive set with all things Ghostbusters, including autographs.
