When it comes to Marvel movies, the early days were rough. But if 1986 Topps Howard the Duck trading cards are any indication, the promise of collectible merchandising tie-ins were there all along. This set may come from a, erhem, lame duck of a movie, but over the decades it has gained some so-bad-it’s-good kind of charm. The popularity and value of the set has followed a similar path as well.
1986 Topps Howard the Duck Checklist Details
At just 77 cards, the base set is a little smaller than most of Topps’ movie and TV sets. Still, it not only manages to go through the film’s plot, but it also makes room for a small subset of Duck-O-Vision cards that highlight what’s on the titular duck’s television before his adventure on our Earth begins.
Lea Thompson and her massive hair are another highlight of the quirky checklist.
The overall design isn’t all that inspiring with a red border on the front joined by the film’s cracked egg logo and a caption. On the back, an illustration of Howard the Duck is joined by some fairly detailed write-ups.
Twenty-two Stickers are also part of the product, landing one per pack. Although all have yellow borders, there are a couple of designs. Some use a film frame to hold the image in while others go with the traditional Topps thick outline.
For a long time, 1986 Topps Howard the Duck trading cards could be found extremely cheap. They’re not wildly expensive today but boxes are often over $100 now. Set sales are also relatively strong as well.
This set predated pack-inserted signatures by about a decade. However, 2013 Topps 75th Anniversary does have an Ed Gale autograph card that includes a picture of a card from this set. Gale played Howard.
