Sometimes, music makes for a great set of trading cards. Sometimes you end up with 1983 Topps Menudo. That’s not a knock on the boy band. Simply put, they were a product of their time and not a lot of their songs have withstood that test. The cards themselves take a similar path.
Oh, but the band did help launch the career of Ricky Martin. But he didn’t join the band until 1984, after this set’s release. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a “rookie card,” though. Upper Deck did a set dedicated to the singer in 1999 at the height of his fame.
1983 Topps Menudo Checklist Details
The set takes a very standard approach for Topps with a 66-card base set. It’s a lot of studio shots of the band together, although there are some that show them on stage, hanging out or on their own.
Backs come in a couple of different styles. Some have bios and trivia about the band and its members. These are written in both English and Spanish, fitting with Menudo’s popularity in Latin America.
They’re definitely a product of their time with the band’s colorful outfits matched only by the cards’ striped borders.
Joining the main set are 22 Stickers, which are one per pack. These have equally colorful block borders and puzzle pieces on the back.
As far as value goes, there’s not a lot here. Boxes can still be found for under $50. It’s a set best served as a time capsule and some teenage nostalgia for those who grew up with the band.
