As the 1970s came to a close, Jim Henson’s Muppets had reached phenom status. But despite being one of the most recognized characters in the world, Kermit and company didn’t get any trading cards, at least in North America, until their first film. 1979 General Mills Muppet Movie trading cards is one of just a few sets to include Henson’s iconic creations.
The set has 12 cards. They came issued on the backs of Cheerios and other General Mills cereal boxes. Each specially marked box had three cards.
Because they were on the boxes themselves and not packaged separately in with the cereal, they had to be hand cut. As a result, there are plenty cards out there with rough and slightly crooked edges.
1979 General Mills Muppet Movie cards use images from the film. Each highlights one or two characters. Not surprisingly, Kermit gets the most attention. He’s on four of the set’s dozen cards.
