1975 Topps Planet of the Apes TV trading cards are one of the few surviving relics of the short-lived spin-off television series. The show might not have been particularly memorable or even good, it did give fans of the franchise a second set of cards to collect following 1969’s movie-based release.
Consisting of 66 cards, it’s bigger that the movie’s 44. Images are a mix human and ape characters from the show, all balancing out somewhat equally. Don’t look for a lot of action, though. It’s mostly portraits and pairs standing around. One could say that the excitement of the trading cards mimics the show they’re based on.
As far as design goes, 1975 Topps Planet of the Apes TV fronts have the same layout as the 1969 movie set. That means an image with a white border and a small red flag for the caption.
Backs are different, blending a block of text with a puzzle piece.
Like the movie set, the copyright date doesn’t match up with when the cards were produced. These say 1967, likely the year that 20th Century Fox established their marks for the franchise. The movie itself first hit theatres in the first half of 1968. The TV-based set is definitely from 1975, though.
With more collectors focused on the movie franchise, 1975 Topps Planet of the Apes TV trading cards remain widely available considering their age and affordable.
