1974 Topps Evel Knievel trading cards jump over rows of cars. They launch rockets into the sky. And, oh the red, white and blue. All together, the set is a legend-building exercise of one of the biggest and most influential names in 1970s pop culture.
1974 Topps Evel Knievel Checklist Details
Consisting of a modest 60 cards, the 1974 Topps Evel Knievel checklist showcases the stuntman’s skills. This means lots of wheelies and jumps on motorbikes, some rocket launches and more. Beyond that, it also spotlights Knievel’s skills as a showman. The jumpsuit is on full display on nearly every card. Several also show him in front of a crowd. The set truly does capture Knievel’s status as an American icon.
The design matches the over-the-top stunts that are shown. A blue border gives way to a red banner inner frame, complete with white stars. It’s patriotic in one sense, doubling as a perfect match to Knievel’s famous jumpsuit.
Backs are blue with an illustration of Knievel on his bike. Write-ups offer biographical details, albeit with a slant towards the myth of Evel Knievel and making him out to be some sort of folk hero. Info on his background, stunts and even injuries are included. Every cards also has a warning, “Motorcycle and bike stunting can be dangerous. Don’t take chances!”
Just a Test
1974 Topps Evel Knievel trading cards are a test issue. This means they were available in some regions but not nationwide. The implications today are smaller print runs and more limited availability compared to a lot of other releases from the era.
Instead of wax, the set has cello packs. Each has six cards plus one sheet of Auto Stickers. These stickers aren’t original to this particular release. They’re the same ones found in 1970 Topps Way Out Wheels. Each of the 22 cards has 16 smaller stickers on it with a variety of car-related logos and icons. The Evel Knievel set isn’t mentioned anywhere on them.
Because of the smaller print run, 1974 Topps Evel Knievel trading cards carry solid values today. There’s also the nostalgia that comes with the kids who grew up idolizing him looking to reconnect with their hero.
