If you’re looking for funky vintage trading cards, they don’t get much funkier than 1969 Topps Mod Squad. Based on the crime show that originally aired from 1968 to 1973, it’s simple in its set up but definitely a product of its time when it comes to aesthetics.
1969 Topps Mod Squad Checklist Details
The 55-card base set includes shots from the show, which stars Michael Cole (not the WWE announcer), Peggy Lipton and Clarence Williams III. While there’s some action, looking back at the cards today, the real star is the clothing and era-specific look of the set.
Much like the hippie culture tone of the show, the design adopts some of the same vibes. If there was an award for the vintage trading card design that best evokes a lava lamp, this is it.
Backs offer some show details, but the write-ups are brief because most of the space is dedicated to puzzle pieces.
With Mod Squad episodes not making the rounds too often anymore, there is certainly an argument that the show will continue to disappear in the years ahead. Yes, there was a movie starring Claire Danes, Omar Epps and Giovanni Ribisi in 1999, but that’s even more forgotten. With that, interest in these cards could continue to wane as well. Even still, the look alone makes them worth checking out.
