Even the longest journeys have to start somewhere. 1967 Leaf Star Trek launched one of the most popular and enduring trading card franchises of all-time. The beginnings are humble and still have some mysteries. And while not necessarily an immediate success, today it is one of the most important ever in all of pop culture trading cards.
1967 Leaf Star Trek Checklist Details
Consisting of 72 cards, 1967 Leaf Star Trek isn’t the most attractive. Fronts have black and white photos, removing a lot of the era-specific look and palette. With it goes much of the wonderment that the sci-fi classic brought with it.
Backs have a red-toned image of Captain Kirk and Spock along with a write-up. If you’re looking for episode recaps, you’re not going to find them. While some cards do touch on the actual episodes, others go off in their own direction.
The quality of the cards isn’t great either. Printed on poor stock, edges, dings, centering and miscuts are all common issues. Landing top-condition cards is extremely tough — and expensive.
1967 Leaf Star Trek trading cards are fairly tough to find today. While not on quite the same level as many test issues of the era, there’s not the broad availability, either. Intentional or not, the set’s distribution — or lack thereof — is a likely big reason why. It’s commonly believed that the cards weren’t widely available and only originally sold in parts of the midwest.
But was there more to it than that? It’s possible that the cards may have been pulled either because of poor sales in the few areas that it was available. Some also think that the set might not have had all the permissions required to avoid different copyright issues.
No matter the case, the rarity has added to the set’s intrigue over the decades as it has made an already important set that more more challenging and interesting.
