1961 Topps Sports Cars looks at the world of automobiles. Today, the set looks nice and stands up but some of its original context. In the 1950s and ’60s, automobiles shifted from being some practical to a fashion statement. Designs were evolving and performance improving. Muscle cars and custom cars became mainstream hobbies and a nice ride was a status symbol. This set captures some of that, profiling different cards from around the world.
1961 Topps Sports Cars Checklist Details
Consisting of 66 cards, 1961 Topps Sports Cars profiles some of the fastest and sleekest vehicles on the planet at the time. Porsche, Mercedes, Ferrari, Volkswagen and Jaguar are just some of the rides from around the world that are showcased.
The format and style of the set is similar to a traditional Topps sports card set like baseball or football. The obvious difference here is that it’s with cars instead of athletes. The front pictures the car with minimal design elements. The back offers a bio, some stats and even a comic, pretty much exactly like what you’d find in one of their baseball card sets at the time.
1961 Topps Sports Cars cards use the tallboy format and are bigger than traditional trading cards. They measure 2 1/2″ by 4 11/16″ — slightly longer that usual.
Each pack also includes on License Plate Sticker. A total of 40 make up the set, showcasing plate styles from different parts of the country.
Values on cards remain fairly strong. While the set itself isn’t that rare, top condition cards are quite scarce, making a high-grade set tough to build.
