1956 Topps Davy Crockett Green Back trading cards are the second set based on the Disney adaptation. It follows up on the Orange Back series that, at the time, were much more popular arriving at a time when the coon skin cap was still in its phenomenon phase. Today, though, things have shifted and Davy Crockett Green Back cards are the more desirable of the two sets, at least as far as values go.
1956 Topps Davy Crockett Green Back Checklist Details
Made up of 80 cards, the set dives deeper into the legend of Davy Crockett as told through a Disney lens. Frontier history and myth converge, culminating in the battle of the Alamo. Fess Parker stars on many cards but Buddy Ebsen of Beverly Hillbillies fame is among the other actors featured in the set.
1956 Topps Davy Crockett Green Back cards are virtually identical in design as the earlier Orange Back set. Fronts have basic white borders with a simple red banner for the caption. Backs have the same scenic Alamo drawing to anchor the synopsis. A mention of King of the Wild Frontier runs along the bottom.
Backs do have a couple of differences, though. The first is obvious given the set name. Backgrounds are indeed green in the Green Back set. Numbers are also tweaked with an ‘A’ added.
Davy Crockett’s popularity was starting to wane by the time the second set of trading cards came out, resulting in a smaller print run. Today, Green Backs are noticeably tougher to find. This can be seen with the PSA population report. As of November, 2022, just over 6,000 Orange Back cards had been graded. By comparison, they’d inspected approximately 3,800 1956 Topps Davy Crockett Green Back cards.
Besides the usual wear that came with handling and playing with vintage cards, finding well-centered Green Back cards is also challenging. The somewhat thin borders don’t hide this, either. Even being off slightly is noticeable to the eye.
