1953 Topps Tarzan and the She Devil trading cards are a rough adaptation of the film that came out the same year. Only, you’re not going to find any movie stills. But you will find a primitive 3-D effect. Have your special glasses ready.
The set consists of 60 cards. Fronts have a black-bordered illustration covering a scene from the story. Enter the set’s gimmick. They have red and blue 3-D so these images look off to the naked eye. You can see what’s going on, but they’re not overly pleasant to look at. However, once you grab a pair of 3-D glasses, things clear up a little along with a little added depth. Still, it doesn’t make for overly attractive cards.
For those who aren’t a fan of the 3-D gimmick, card backs might be the star of the release. On one side is a write-up of the featured scene. Backs also highlight some of the jungle’s natural wonders on the other side. These have a little bit of information as well as a separate illustration. It’s mostly animals. 1953 Topps Tarzan and the She Devil backs have green borders.
Topps also released Tarzan Savage Fury in 1953 in a similar format. These have green frames on the front and orange on the back. Savage Fury is also the rarer of the two releases.
Today, 1953 Topps Tarzan and the She Devil is one of the decade’s more affordable trading card releases. Even in higher grades, singles are largely affordable.
