Video games turned into movies don’t have a very good track record. Street Fighter might not be the worst example, but it is still pretty bad. So bad, it can be fun. It’s with that same notion that the 1994 Upper Deck Street Fighter Movie trading cards should be treated.
As far as quality goes, there’s nothing wrong with the product. It’s glossy, it has some cool inserts and there’s a hologram of Jean-Claude Van Damme. That has to be the definition of cool. Maybe.
The base set has 90 cards, recapping the movie and highlighting its colorful characters. The stills also show how poorly done some of those characters are, particularly Blanka who looks like the long, lost cousin to Lou Ferrigno’s Incredible Hulk. That wouldn’t be such a bad thing if the movie came out 15 years earlier, but it wasn’t.
The base card design is on the busy side, but that’s the mid-1990s talking. As far as quality goes, they’re slick like virtually all Upper Deck sets.
As for inserts, 1994 Upper Deck Street Fighter Movie came out a couple of years before autographs became a thing in entertainment trading cards. But that doesn’t mean they’re not interesting. Both the one-card Animation and ten-card Special F/X sets use foil with stunning results.
And then there’s the Van Damme Lithogram, a hologram-style card of the ’90s action icon. Hate on the movie all you want but maybe we should be thankful for its existence just because of this card.
